I am a college professor of biostatistics at a good private university in the Southeastern US.
I have always been a bit of a shutterbug, which only grew worse when I received my first digital camera in 2006.
I got involved in an archaeology project in 2008, and, as a result, I have traveled to Greece every summer since then. In 2009 I purchased a Gigapan to use there, supplementing my colleague M. Page's (aka waypoints) efforts.
I participated in the 2010 Fine International Conference on Gigapans for Science in November, and you can google for those proceedings and find the work that we do on the Greek island of Samothrace. You can also look at samothrace.emory.edu to get an even broader feel for the project.
I have one of the Gigapan beta-units. Recently, however, I have received a new Nikon DSLR camera, so I guess a new Gigapan is in my future. I'm hoping to continue to grow in my abilities with the Gigapan specifically and as a photographer in general.
