Tha Homer spit has a maximum height above the water of 19 or so feet making it suseptible to Storm Surge. Also Tsunami. after the great Alaskan earthquake 1964 the surge rolled over the spit destroying many buidings. As there are a nmber of very active ( as of 2011) Volcanos just acorss Cook Inlet from the mouth of Kachemak bay people around Homer take tsunami warnings very seriously.
