Perhaps you are right Dr. Watson. On closer inspection the object in question is flat against the chair back making the "screen" impossible to view. I can't imagine what led me to make such an elementary error unless it is all the opium I have been smoking recently.

But have you notice the distance between chair backs? I would suggest that this is proof categorical that this is not a First Class compartment.

No, it is not a laptop... it is one of those fold-down things that you find on airplanes and British trains... where you place your coffee or tea cups and sandwiches. This is not a first-class car because you would never find a fold-down thing there... only tables with white table cloths, at least on the trains between Kings Cross and Edinburgh, not sure what the practice there is anymore between Paddington and Penzance or Plymouth vis Bristol Temple Meads, but I would expect that this train, if indeed it is the one to Aberdeen, to have a luxury first class compartment, which we do not see, but its okay that we don't because we get to see people's priceless expressions in this GigaPan.

I think that what we can see on the left hand edge of your snapshot is the raised screen of a laptop. I am not enough of a 'spod' (extreme trainspotting geek) to be able to help you with carriage recognition, sorry.
