One of two suspension bridges which span the Halifax Harbour, the MacDonald Bridge is the site of an annual "Bridge Walk" on Canada Day each year. Citizens from Halifax and Dartmouth (the city on the Eastern side of the Harbour) take the bridge away from vehicular traffic for the afternoon and stroll to the sounds of pipe and drum bands while appreciating the wonderful view from the bridge deck of the two cityscapes.

A gift, in 1805, from Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, to the citizens of Halifax after his posting as commandant in the town for several years, its original pendulum-run mechanism still powers the clock's hands on all four faces. The clock face facing the garrison in the fortress is smaller because of the short distance to the fortress walls from here. The clock faces which serve the town itself are larger.
