"Fertilibee Lights" by andrew johnstone from the GigaPan Burning Man 2012 by Rich Gibson
Another tradition of the Man base is a ring of structures around the Man Base to form a zone of introduction into the space. These are designed and built by Jack "Opa" Heye, and in this years theme of "Fertility" represented a phallic beehive. They made a welcoming glow of light and a sexy place to sit.

Alpha by andrew johnstone from the GigaPan Burning Man 2012 by Rich Gibson
The neon crew is led by the amazing "Smoke Daddy" and tells me he knows every bump in the roads between LA and BRC.
"Daddy" paid his own tribute to Departed City Designer, Rod Garrett, by making a neon alpha on the 6:00 side and an Omega on the 12:00 side. He also used a cream colored neon, rather thah the traditional bright hue, as a further mark of respect.0 comments

The Man is encouraged to burn by wrappings of burlap sack cloth soacked in parafin wax. This is done in a tradition called "Waxing Of The Man". This happens before the Man is lifted when huge vats of wax are melted followed by a very good party.

Arm raising mechanism by andrew johnstone from the GigaPan Burning Man 2012 by Rich Gibson
The iconic pose of The Man is with arms raised, but in reality he only adopts that form for 90 minutes before he burns on Saturday night. A steel hinge is connected to cables and pullies is emploies to swing and lock the arms which weigh several hunderd pounds each.

Heart of the Man by andrew johnstone from the GigaPan Burning Man 2012 by Rich Gibson
A steel plate with a red glass heart. It is a marker for the crew that build the Man.
Below the heart is a scroll (difficult to see here) with "ROD" cut into it as a tribute to Burning Man Designer Rod Garrett who passed away in August 2011.0 comments
