    the Purbeck limestone beds form the base of the Cretaceous stratigraphy in Dorset. On Portland they are stripped off as overburned during quarrying to allow access to the famous Portland limestone underneath.

    these structures are part of a limestone bed known as the Fossil Forest. It appears near the base of the Purbeck Beds and marks a period of transition between a coastal forrest to a swamp environment 145 million years ago at the end of the Jurassic period.
