Madre de Dios River by Jeff Cremer from the GigaPan Puerto Maldonado Peru by Jeff Cremer
The Madre de Dios River, homonymous to the Peruvian region it runs through, then becomes the Beni River in Bolivia and then turns northward into Brazil, where it is called the Madeira River. The Madeira is a tributary to the Amazon River.
The Madre de Dios is an important waterway for the department of Madre de Dios, particularly Puerto Maldonado, the largest town in the area, and the capital of the department. Mango farming and Gold mining are among the many industries on its beaches. Other important industries the Madre de Dios provides are selective logging and farming, both of which are serious environmental problems.
Along the length of the river there are several national parks and reserves, notably Tambopata-Candamo National Park, Manu National Park (also known as Manu Biosphere Reserve) and Bahuaja-Sonene National Park.

Two by Jeff Cremer from the GigaPan Peruvian Nuevo Sol by Jeff Cremer
The glyph we use today in the Western world to represent the number 2 traces its roots back to the Brahmin Indians, who wrote 2 as two horizontal lines (it is still written that way in modern Chinese and Japanese). The Gupta rotated the two lines 45 degrees, making them diagonal, and sometimes also made the top line shorter and made its bottom end curve towards the center of the bottom line. Apparently for speed, the Nagari started making the top line more like a curve and connecting to the bottom line. The Ghubar Arabs made the bottom line completely vertical, and now the glyph looked like a dotless closing question mark. Restoring the bottom line to its original horizontal position, but keeping the top line as a curve that connects to the bottom line leads to our modern glyph.

Butterfly Scales by Jeff Cremer from the GigaPan Blue Morpho Menelaus Butterfly Wing by Jeff Cremer
Butterfly Scales
When light hits the different layers of a butterfly wing, it is reflected numerous times. The combination of all these reflections causes the intense colors of many species.

Butterfly Scales by Jeff Cremer from the GigaPan Owl Butterfly Wing ( Papilio eurilochus ) by Jeff Cremer
Butterflies are characterized by their scale-covered wings. The coloration of butterfly wings is created by minute scales. These scales are pigmented with melanins that give them blacks and browns, but blues, greens, reds and iridescence are usually created not by pigments but the microstructure of the scales. This structural coloration is the result of coherent scattering of light by the photonic crystal nature of the scales. The scales cling somewhat loosely to the wing and come off easily without harming the butterfly.

Rimac River by Jeff Cremer from the GigaPan Lima, Peru - Lima Cercado, Barrios Altos, Rimac, El Agustino from Cerro San Cristobal by Jeff Cremer
This is whats left of the Rimac river.
The Rimac is the most important source of potable water for the Lima and Callao Metropolitan Area.
The river is part of the Pacific watershed and has a length of 160 km. The river begins in the highlands of the Huarochirí Province in the Lima Region and its mouth is located in Callao, near Jorge Chávez International Airport. The name Rímac is from the Quechua word rimaq, meaning "talking",[1] leading to it being nicknamed El Río Hablador ("The Talking River").

Combi by Jeff Cremer from the GigaPan Lima, Peru - Lima Cercado, Barrios Altos, Rimac, El Agustino from Cerro San Cristobal by Jeff Cremer
The touts who collect the fee for a ride in a combi (mini-van) are are polite, charming, and well-mannered. And they have their own cutesy dialect, typically yelled out the open side door of the combi while it is moving.
You can learn it while you enjoy this unforgettable experience. Some examples: "¿habla, vas?"; "¡al fondo hay sitio!"; "pie derecho"; "apéguese"; "hay asiento, hay asiento"; "baja, baja"; "dale, dale"; "pisa pisaaa!"; "subeeee"; "ya, éntrate ya"; "chama chamaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa"; "avanza pa' tras"; "golpe avisa"; "retrocede pa' delante" and "pasajeee a la mano, pasajeee a la mano." If you try to pay with a US dollar, you may hear: "SE CONCIENTE PE VARÓN" or "el medio está luca, pe' choche."
Cobradores make money by filling the combi. They make more money by over-filling it and by getting you to leave early. They do not make money by telling you truthfully where the combi is going, by making it stop where you want to get off, nor by keeping it stopped until you are all the way off.

Mototaxi by Jeff Cremer from the GigaPan Lima, Peru - San Juan de Lurigancho, Caja de Agua by Jeff Cremer
An auto rickshaw or three-wheeler (tuk-tuk, trishaw, auto, rickshaw, autorick, bajaj, rick, tricycle, mototaxi, or baby taxi in popular parlance) is a motor vehicle and a mode of transport for private use and as a vehicle for hire. It is a motorized version of the traditional rickshaw or velotaxi, a small three-wheeled cart operated by a single individual, and is a 3-wheeled cabin cycle
It is a common sight in the rural areas and many towns and cities of Peru to see Bajaj auto rickshaws, locally known as mototaxis or motocarros, lining up to pick up passengers as their fare is very low. They are also in the capital, Lima, but they are usually restricted to the poorer districts.
