Mouth of Butte Creek by Zeke Lunder from the GigaPan Fremont Weir and the Confluence of the Sacramento and Feather Rivers by Zeke Lunder
Butte Creek flows from the mountains Northeast of Chico and flows across the Sacramento Valley toward the Sutter Buttes. It is shunted around the West end of the Sutter Buttes and into the borrow pits created when levees were built for the Sutter Bypass. This point is where those canals reach the River again. Wild Chinook Salmon bound for spawning grounds near Chico leave the Sacramento River here and begin their migration up Butte Creek.

Hydraulic line by Zeke Lunder from the GigaPan Moonlight Fire Salvage Logging by Zeke Lunder
Logging equipment is very prone to catching on fire, and also known for starting forest fires. The wildfire that burned this area was started by logging equipment working on a hot windy day.
Any beat-up, hard-working heavy equipment is going to leak hydraulic fluid, grease, and oil. Also, this equipment has all sorts of nooks and crannies for kindling, pine needles, and sticks to build up in. Add the friction of heavily laden cables, and you have a fire-starting machine.
This machine was not burned by the fire, it may even still be operational It was just sitting out there in the woods.

Babu trees by Zeke Lunder from the GigaPan Moonlight Fire Salvage Logging by Zeke Lunder
Salvage logged areas have been replanted with new trees. In the past, some argue that we have planted too many trees in logged or burned areas, and that this has helped to cause the thickets that now drive large destructive wildfires.
