158 State Street by Ella Derbyshire from the GigaPan Wide View of the Empire State Plaza by Ella Derbyshire
Home of Ma Bell. New York Telephone Company, Nynex, Verizon....
Perhaps her greatest achievement: She remained standing firm as the surrounding neighborhood was transformed into the Empire State Plaza.
Her downfall: Judge Harold H Greene toppled the House of Bell with divestiture in 1984. The building and the phone services within remain.0 comments

The Alferd E. Smith State Office Building by Ella Derbyshire from the GigaPan Albany NY from Rensselaer by Ella Derbyshire
In 1928 when this 388-foot tall building appeared in Albany, it was the tallest structure in Upstate New York. Today the nearby Corning Tower is Albany's tallest building. Walk around the Smith Building to see the names of all 62 New York State counties engraved on its facade. Walk into the lobby to see the newly restored mural of New York State historical figures.

This 19th Century whaling ship has spent a lot of time in the brine. This year she will be hauled out of the water for restoration. You will be able to watch the whole process, as it will all happen at Mystic Seaport.

Regina M. by Ella Derbyshire from the GigaPan Charles W. Morgan and Regina M. in Mystic by Ella Derbyshire
A pretty name for a carry away sloop. Before her museum days, the Regina M. hauled herring from fish traps on Passamaquoddy Bay to canneries on shore.

The Charles W. Morgan is decorated for the holidays. I have no idea how they got this Christmas tree to the top of this mast, but I was very impressed to see it there.

There are a lot of boats in town, and summer opens up the possibility of travel by river to remote villages. This boat looks like it's headed for Gunsight Mountain, which marks the mouth of the Noatak River.

Where did they get all of these ropes?? by Ella Derbyshire from the GigaPan The Clam Shack and Other Buildings at Mystic Seaport by Ella Derbyshire
When you visit the museum, step through this door to see 250 feet of the Plymouth Cordage Company's ropewalk. The machines that made the ropes for many of the tall ships that sailed out of New England are silent, but do watch a demonstration of the process and look at the examples of the different ropes that were used on large sailing vessels.

The Brant Point Lighthouse by Ella Derbyshire from the GigaPan The Clam Shack and Other Buildings at Mystic Seaport by Ella Derbyshire
This small lighthouse, an exact replica of the famous Nantucket light, is found at the south point of the museum grounds. You can see the fourth-order Fresnel lens inside the glass at its top. The Mystic light is pretty, but it has never been used as aid to navigation.

The plaque reads "Dedicated to the People of New York November 21, 1973 Nelson A Rockefeller Governor" As you can see, there is some snow obscuring the writing. The plaque also lists the names and offices of other leaders of New York government from this era.
OGS is Office of General Services which, amomg its many functions, oversees the maintenance and day to day activities of the Empire State Plaza.0 comments
