rocks delimit the tunnel roof by Paul Heckbert from the GigaPan view down into the cut on Pinkerton Horn, 2012/7 by Paul Heckbert
Perhaps the holes (surrounded by rocks) are test drills to locate the roof of the new Pinkerton tunnel. This is the tunnel that will be dug up ("daylighted"). While it is still active, workers must be careful to not disturb the tracks below.

and turned into a tailing dump. A local man said that bear dens and rattlesnake dens were discovered and disturbed, in the process. This will leave an ugly scar on the land for 50-100 years.

Rick's head before incision by Paul Heckbert from the GigaPan Richard in the Nutcracker Suite by Paul Heckbert
Dr. Richardson has shaved the hair on the right side of Rick's head (in the area where Rick had brain surgery in the 80s) and has marked the curve along which he will cut the scalp (purple line visible near top). Rick's head is clamped in place so that it will not move during surgery.

monitor displaying what the doctor sees through the microscrope by Paul Heckbert from the GigaPan Rick's epilepsy brain surgery by Paul Heckbert
We are looking through the hole in Rick's skull and seeing his brain here. Dr Richardson spent several hours very carefully separating the hippocampus from other tissue in the brain, before removing the hippocampus.

operating on Rick's brain by Paul Heckbert from the GigaPan Rick's epilepsy brain surgery by Paul Heckbert
Rick's hair is visible under the greenish plastic at the bottom of this snapshot. The red is his scalp, which was cut and pulled back.
Dr Richardson worked like this for about five hours; his concentration was quite impressive.

disappearing handrails by Paul Heckbert from the GigaPan USC vs. VMI Baseball Panorama by Rob Thompson
A technical note about this panorama: the handrails end at the vertical centerline of this snapshot - the stitching alignment is way off. I suspect that the input images didn't overlap horizontally.

Did you know that George H W Bush shares your birthday? And Ann Frank, also? Richard Thomas, John Boy on the Waltons, was born one day after you (also in 1951).
