Communicating, exploring and learning enhanced with GigaPan

Milky Way

Explore and discover the central parts of the Milky Way by zooming into the galaxy that details over 84 million stars.

  • Explore the incredible nine-gigapixel VISTA mosaic displaying the central parts of the Milky Way. It details over 84 million stars! This massive sized image was created using the VISTA survey telescope at the European Organisation for Astronomical Research in the Southern Hemisphere’s (ESO) Paranal Observatory in Chile. It is a combination of thousands of individually created images that are stitched together in a single mosaic. The high resolution image give viewers a zoomable, detailed view of the central parts of our galaxy that cannot be seen by most viewers looking at a standard image of the Milky Way.
  • Share the EPIC vision. From Mars to Earth, GigaPan is a pioneer in using technology to bring us closer together. Exciting education and research is happening around the world which uses our amazing technology to help promote and communicate more effectively, see more clearly and share an EPIC vision of our world.
  • Global Connection Project. Carnegie Mellon, NASA, Google, and National Geographic started this non-profit group that coordinates GigaPan outreach, education, and research work.
  • National Geographic. Pine Ridge photo camp provided students at the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota GigaPan equipment to document their community, July 2009 (on left, top left and right; above).
