The McCartys lava flow is located in El Malpais National Monument, near Grants, New Mexico. www.nps.gov/elma/index.htm
The flow is ~3,500 years old and stretches for ~50 km.
This pan shows a lobe that has broken out from along the margin of one of the inflated sheet lobes.
Investigation of inflated lava flows helps us to understand similar processes that occur on the Moon and Mars.
Field research is supported by NASA's Planetary Geology and Geophysics program and NASA's Moon and Mars Analog Mission Activities program.
