The low scarp just beyond my Jeep marks the trace of the surface rupture of the 1872 Lone Pine M~7.8 Earthquake (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1872_Lone_Pine_earthquake
). The quake occured on a normal fault that bounds the east side of the Alabama Hills and displaced the surface here over 10 vertical feet - in addition...-

Be thankful GigaPans are strictly visual. Elephant seals don't smell that great.

I'd love to have had just a little more elevation for this one.

This bridge has been previously GigaPanned by Christopher Diersen (www.gigapan.org/gigapans/1913/) -I think he got better color out of it. I wanted to catch a slightly wider view of the local stratigraphy. Looks like we both had partly cloudy days. :-(

The Gunnison River has cut down through Precambrian igneous and metamorphic rocks in western Colorado to form one of the deepest gorges in North America. This morning shot captures the famous Painted Wall, so named for the many light colored granitic dikes that appear to some as an artists brush strokes on a canvas of...

A morning shot, taken shortly after sunrise, from the east side of town. The Union Pacific Railroad tracks are in the foreground and the Sinclair Oil Refinery looms behind them.

A misjudgement I realized almost as soon as I had made it, but failed to correct in time. I was using the Epic 100 and shooting rows from top to bottom. I should have shot this one from bottom to top. I lost a bunch of good light on the outcrops nearest the river as a consequence. Hopefully that's a mistake I won't...

View is to the west. Ubehebe Peak is the dark peak on the left, a Jurassic granitoid of the Hunter Mountain Intrusive Suite. The lighter rocks to the right are contact metamorphosed Paleozoic sedimentary rocks of the southernmost Last Chance Range. This is my good friend Greg Roselle's Ph.D. thesis area.

Jen Piatek beat me to GigaPanning the "On a Clear Day You Can See Forever" overlook (www.gigapan.org/gigapans/32030/) in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. Since I didn't want to exactly duplicate her GigaPan I decided to try for a slightly different vantage point - in this case, a bit higher. I shot...
