Windy Ridge is one of the best places to get an overview of the area devastated by the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens. The landscape is littered with sand and gray rocks from that event. Deposits of the debris avalanche are visible to the west. These include the lower parts of The Spillover, where the debris avalanc...

This GigaPan image was taken at Roosevelt Dam on the Salt River east of Phoenix, Arizona. It was recorded on My 11, 2010. The wind gusts in the canyon were strong enough to shake the camera on top of the robot. I recorded the images with a Nikon P80 and a GigaPan Beta Imager. The P80 has an 18X optical zoom. On my way back to Hays from Ellis I decided to take a little detour out of the valley of Big Creek and out onto the surrounding high plains. Nearing a crest of a hill I glanced into my rear view mirror and realized what a sweeping panorama lay benind me. So I pulled off the road (onto an embankment that in no way res...

Windy Point is an aptly named stop on the Pikes Peak Cog Railway. Most of the rail is a single track, but switches here and at Minnehaha allow multiple trains to use the route at the same time. On our ascent and on our descent, we waited here for a train headed in the opposite direction to pass us. Although the shaking...
